What is CEFR
CEFR is an abbreviation for COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK of REFERENCE for LANGUAGE. It is a body that assesses your fluency and proficiency in any language. It has the same job as that of ACTFL, CLB and ILR.
Levels of CEFR
The CFER describes language ability on a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. It deals with up to 40 different languages in four different aspects i.e. reading, writing, speaking and listening. We will further explore the levels of CFER and what they mean.
A Levels
A1 Beginner
An A1 level student at CFER can understand use daily life words and short sentences like tell their name inquire about the other person’s identity.
A2 Elementary
A student at A2 level is able to comprehend easy phrases used in daily life dealing like shopping, in a hospital etc.
B Levels
B1 Intermadiate
A student at the level of B1 can somewhat deal with the topics like family, education. The student of B1 level can easy understand traffic terminologies and rules.
B2 Upper
A B2 user can communicate easily and spontaneously in a clear and detailed manner. This is not yet an experienced speaker, but a B2 user is able to understand and be understood in most situations.
C Levels
C1 Proficient
Level C1 corresponds to proficient users of the language. Students are able to understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style. They can understand specialized articles and longer technical instructions, even when they do not relate to their field.
C2 Master
Students at Level C2 demonstrate a degree of precision, appropriateness and ease with the language which typifies the speech of those who have been highly successful learners. They have a good command of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms with awareness of connotative level of meaning and can backtrack and restructure around a difficulty so smoothly the interlocutor is hardly aware of it.
How to know your CFER level
The CEFR organizes language proficiency in six levels, A1 to C2, which can be regrouped into three broad levels: Basic User, Independent User and Proficient User. The student has to take a well designed test assigned by the authorities to know what level of CFER he is on.
